Sharing the Word for May 30, 2023

Tuesday of the Eighth Week in Ordinary Time

May 30, 2023
Daily Reading from the USCCB: Sirach 35:1-12

Today Sirach speaks of using our secular resources as part of our religious practice.

Giving to the Lord is more than a matter of paying one’s dues to the community. It’s an act of religion. Caring for the poor and treating people justly constitute a sacrifice of praise of the Lord. Our relationship with God calls for us to be generous and cheerful, and will elicit sevenfold generosity from the Lord in return.

Giving is not a matter of bribing God or of responding to a heavenly extortionist, and being called to give to the Lord and to the Lord’s works is not a burden but a privilege; not something we are forced into by the Lord, but his gift which consists in giving.
