Daily Reading from the USCCB: Wisdom 2:1a, 12-22
It can be dangerous to be devoted to God. Observant Jews in second century Alexandria–the source of today’s reading–experienced that. Secularized Jews often looked down on their more religious brethren. Jesus learned that, too. He was God’s own Son, but was seen by many as a hypocrite and a troublemaker.
Scorn for religious conviction is still around today. People may not pay much attention to our individual religious profession. We are generally free to practice whatever faith we choose. But our society in general doesn’t offer much support to religious belief. Our Christian convictions about life, marriage, sexuality, power, success are alien and repugnant to many in our world.
We shouldn’t be surprised. Things have been that way for a long time.
