Daily Reading from the USCCB: Mark 6:1-6
Do we allow people to surprise us? Do we allow God to surprise us? In our Gospel story today, Jesus has returned home. He does not receive a warm welcome back. The townsfolk ask, “Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary?”
They know him, or at least they think they do. And so, despite the wisdom of his words they lack faith in him. This lack of faith severely limits what Jesus can do there. Sometimes we can think we know a person, we put them in a box and they stay there. Those who knew Jesus and his family couldn’t see what was plainly in front of them.
Faith means being open to surprises by God. This is a good thing too, because most of us long for deeper conversion. We want to be more than we are now. If we want this for ourselves, should we not also look for transformation in others?
