Daily Reading from the USCCB: John 6:16-21
Jesus hustles his disciples away from the crowd who want to make him king. They start to cross the sea by boat without Jesus. A storm arises. The disciples see Jesus walking toward them across the sea. They grow panicky. Jesus reassures them–identifying himself with the name God had given himself to Moses: “I AM.”
Jesus presents himself in power walking on the water, yet he is concerned for his disciples: “Don’t be afraid.” All this continues Jesus’ preparation for the bread of life discourse that is soon to come.
He has just fed a hungry multitude. Now in addition Jesus is presenting himself as one who is powerful, loving, kind–manifesting the presence of God. Jesus relates to us in those same ways.
