Reflect
In Luke 2:8, we are offered a glimpse into the lifestyle of shepherds at the time of Jesus’ birth: “And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.” How might we, too, commit ourselves to working diligently and humbly, to “abiding” in this process as our own prayer to God?
Pray
Consider my toiling in the fields my prayer, this humble vocation, my devotion to you.
I know not when you’ll call me forth to bow before the king.
I cannot yet sense your nearness.
I do not know how you will return.
But I know you gave me this life, this call, to steward.
I will work and serve until you move me toward the manger.
Then I will return again to the field, my home,
having bowed before the giver of this gift.
Act
Consider today what it looks like to “abide in the field.” How can you dedicate your service and “toiling” to God as a prayer?
