Reflect
There are people in our midst and around the world who for the most part go unseen. As a society and as individuals, we’re almost programmed to be blind to these human beings–many of whom live on the margins: the immigrant, the unhoused, the displaced, the broken. May we lift up these “others” in our world through prayer.
Pray
God of the forgotten and nameless, bring your light and love
to those who seem to fade from view
so that they are brought closer to us.
Even if—especially if–it makes us uncomfortable,
draw us together in your gentle way,
thawing the ice between “us” and “them,”
the “haves” and the “have-nots,”
“saint” and “sinner.”
Act
Think of a person or group of people who are on the margins of your community or parish. Reach out with compassion and get to know that person or group of people better. You might feel awkward at first, but with practice, you’ll notice how easy it is to humanize others. Review this list of media resources related to marginalized groups.
