Reflect

Most of us, especially as we get older, deal with aches and pains. Some of us may even suffer constant, chronic physical pain. Pain can sap our strength and distract us from other goods in our lives. But accepting our pain can also invite us into a deeper level of vulnerability, humility, and faith.

Pray

Crucified One,
When we experience pain,
May we not waste our suffering.
Sanctify it:
May it draw us closer to you;
May it help us be kind to our fragile selves
And to all the crucified of today.

Act

We shouldn’t just gut out pain if relief is possible. Nor should we treat pain as an enemy to be avoided at all costs. When you’re in pain, try to discern—perhaps with the help of a loved one or spiritual guide—what gifts it may have to offer.
