Reflect

“Though I thought I had toiled in vain, for nothing and for naught spent my strength, yet my right is with the Lord. . . . I am honored in the sight of the Lord” (Is 49:4–6). So much of our lives we may feel unseen, unnoticed, even unloved, uselessly exhausting ourselves in search of a reward that never comes. But what is it we are looking for? What kind of reward do we want from this world when we are already being made glorious in the eyes of God?

Pray

Heavenly Father,
Open my eyes to see the grace and love that already surround me in your sight.
There is nothing I can do to make you love me more.
When no one else notices me, you number the hairs on my head,
you watch over my every step, my every stumble,
and it is only in your love that I, too, am made glorious.
I give this day to you, O Lord, thy will be done.

Act

Do a random act of kindness for someone today. If it is unseen, so much the better. Pull a neighbor’s garbage can back to the house for her or set someone’s newspaper by his or her front door. Wash someone’s dishes without mentioning it. If you see trash dropped in the street (or on the floor at work) pick it up. Don’t ask who did it or whose job it is. Just quietly and humbly do something selfless, unnoticed, and kind, and trust in God to reveal the glory.
