Daily Reading from the USCCB: Matthew 10:1-7
Jesus gathers a special group of his followers representing the twelve tribes of Israel. They were a sign that a new chosen people was being formed.
They were to extend the ministry of Jesus–to heal and drive out unclean spirits–but they were not yet to teach. Their ministry was limited to the lost sheep of Israel. Jesus gave them a message to deliver: “The kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
What we have here is the beginnings of the Church. It’s not yet complete. Its agenda is not yet fully formed. But the basic message is there–something new is happening; a new kingdom of God is here. What the apostles proclaimed is with us today. We are called to accept it.
