Sharing the Word for April 7, 2022

Thursday of the Fifth Week of Lent

April 7, 2022
Daily Reading from the USCCB: Psalm 105:4-5, 6-7, 8-9

Today’s reflection is based on Psalm 105. Today’s readings are about Abraham. In the First Reading God enters a covenant with Abraham, promising to make him the father of a host of nations. In addition he promises to Abraham the whole land of Canaan as a permanent possession.

In the Gospel reading Jesus claims to be greater than Abraham and to have been born before Abraham was. The responsorial refrain highlights God’s faithfulness. “The Lord remembers his covenant forever.”

“Forever” includes the present time. God has promised to us the homeland and the family he promised to Abraham. Christ’s claim to be prior to Abraham is still in force. The promises God made are fulfilled differently now than they were at the beginning, but the Lord is still with us faithfully and forever.
