This week we celebrate the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist, who foretold of Christ’s coming, telling the people that “one mightier than I is coming.”
The heavens ripped open wide the day Jesus was baptized. From that moment forward, he walked under an open heaven: meaning he walked in his fullness as one loved by the Father.
This week’s Gospel tells of John the Baptist proclaiming Jesus’ coming and then later baptizing Jesus in the Jordan river.
The catechumens in my RCIA group asked me these questions: Can permanent deacons administer the Sacrament of the Sick? Can a non-baptized person receive the Sacrament of the Sick? Can a baptized person who is not a Catholic receive the Sacrament of the Sick? If not, why not?
Having a baby baptized is both an act of faith and a cultural affair. It is both a statement of trust in the goodness of God as well as a family event that can be faith-filled.

The people were filled with expectation,

John answered them all, saying,
“I am baptizing you with water,
but one mightier than I is coming.
We commonly say that the sacraments are signs that effect what they signify. That’s a fancy way of saying that they do what they say they do.
The Bible provides a number of straightforward teachings about how a disciple of Jesus is to live, but there are less clear lessons too.
Sitting, standing, and kneeling during Mass each have their own distinct role in helping us fully experience and appreciate the liturgy.
