Daily Reading from the USCCB: Jeremiah 18:18-20

Jeremiah has been preaching about the people’s sinfulness. They’re not receptive. “We don’t need Jeremiah,” they say. “We’ve got plenty of guidance already. Let’s find some way to get rid of this troublesome maverick.”

Jeremiah turns to God for help and asks God to remember that what he had proclaimed to the people was done at God’s behest, for the well-being of the people.

This reading is a foretaste of the response that Jesus would receive to his preaching. But it also serves to highlight the response that representatives of the Church today sometimes receive when they call people to repentance. Proclaiming the Church’s teaching about sexuality, social justice, marriage, war and peace doesn’t often elicit much applause from God’s people, does it?
