Sharing the Word for June 22, 2020 – Twelfth Week in Ordinary Time – Year 2

Monday of the Twelfth Week in Ordinary Time

June 22, 2020
Daily Reading from the USCCB: Matthew 7:1-5

Judging others is dangerous. First we will ourselves be judged by the same criteria we use to judge others, and the standards that we apply to others are generally demanding. When we judge others we are preparing a harsh judgment for ourselves.

In addition we are generally incapable of judging objectively. We are simply not equipped to weigh all the elements that go into the complex reality of the other. We don’t know enough to judge rightly. Finally if all men and women are our brothers and sisters, we should be unwilling to subject them to the perils of judgment.

The Sermon on the Mount calls us to be like God. But trying to exercise God’s judgmental prerogatives is generally more than we can handle.
