Sharing the Word for December 7, 2021

Memorial of Saint Ambrose

Daily Reading from the USCCB: Psalm 96:1-2, 3, 10ac, 11-12, 13

The Lord comes to his people. That calls for singing. There’s always reason to sing a new song to the Lord because there are always new blessings to acclaim him for.

The heavens, the earth, the sea, the plains, the trees of the forest are called to be joyful in the presence of the Lord because the Lord is coming to rule the earth and all its peoples. The glory and the power of the Lord call out for joyous expression. The Lord is coming to rule the world with justice and equity. That calls for singing.

This is a particularly Advent psalm celebrating the Lord’s first coming. But it points forward equally well to the second. “The Lord our God comes with power.”
