Seeing all the celebration that surrounds Jesus’s birth, it seems appropriate that we should likewise celebrate how special each of us is.
Pope Francis reminds us that Christmas calls us to be on the lookout for this manifestation of the divine. And if God wants to dwell with us, we better be willing to open our doors to him.
The signs and bumper stickers that read “Jesus is the reason for the season” are absolutely right. All that we celebrate during this Christmas season began with that birth so many years ago in a manger in Bethlehem.
We might be struggling right now to see God’s plan unfolding, whether in our own lives or those of our children. But Christmas is the beginning of the ultimate happy ending.
The family connection is a strong one. And it is a blessing. As my oldest daughter, Maddie, said to her brother, Alex, once: “You have to love me, I’m your sister. You have no choice.”
Take time to be grateful for the many ways you perceive the world around you—sight, sound, smell, and touch—and the people and places these perceptions evoke.
My daughter Riley is an animal lover. After our dog Hobbes passed away, she carried around a ceramic Yorkshire—complete with Hobbes’s old collar and leash—until we got a new puppy. Riley has great concern for all animals, including birds during the winter months.
God doesn’t tell us not to question, but rather not to be afraid. And whether we come to our response slowly or quickly, we do come to it in the end. And with God’s grace, that answer will be yes.
December brings the shortest days of the year to our country. The lack of natural light can make us feel dreary, tired, and less than joyful. We need light—our bodies crave it.
