Ask a Franciscan

Mothers and Holiness

Q: Most new saints are either priests or women who belonged to religious communities. Which of the most recent saints is a wife and a mother?

A: That would be St. Gianna Beretta Molla (1922-1962), a surgeon who was canonized in 2004. She and her husband had four children. Gianna, who refused to have a complete hysterectomy late in her pregnancy, died shortly after the birth of her daughter Gianna Emmanuela. Her husband, Peter, their son and two surviving daughters attended the canonization.

Visit Saint of the Day for more information about her.
