Daily Reading from the USCCB: 1 Timothy 3:14-16

Today’s Gospel presents Jesus’ tough question: “To what shall I compare the people of this generation?” What was he saying about his own people?

They were like children. Fickle, never contented, they couldn’t make up their minds about him. They said John the Baptist was possessed because he neither ate nor drank. Then they said the Son of Man was a glutton and a drunkard because he did both. The last line of today’s Gospel reading is revealing: “Wisdom is vindicated by all her children.” It seems to me that Jesus was pointing out that the proof of wisdom is the character of the people it produces.

We would do well to ask ourselves if we are like children today. Unable to choose, unable to decide whether we want to follow Jesus with our whole heart, soul, mind and strength. Although that choice can be difficult, to follow Jesus completely will bring true joy. As children of God we are promised eternal life.
