Friday of the Twenty-fourth Week in Ordinary Time

September 18, 2020
Daily Reading from the USCCB: Luke 8:1-3

Jesus’ traveling companions were a mixed lot. There were the Twelve: devoted, weak men, who would show their mettle when Jesus was being led to his death.

There was also a group of women. In Jesus’ time, women traveling with an itinerant rabbi was not just unusual. It was downright scandalous. Women might support their favorite rabbi with money, but they certainly wouldn’t go on the road with him. But they were faithful. Some of them stayed with Jesus when he was dying on the cross. Some were messengers of his resurrection on the first Easter.

Jesus didn’t seem to pay much attention to social convention when it came to laying the foundation of the kingdom. What counted was how much you loved him.
