Sharing the Word for October 22, 2022

Saturday of the Twenty-ninth Week in Ordinary Time

October 22, 2022
Daily Reading from the USCCB: Luke 13:1-9

Jesus here teaches about repentance. First, you shouldn’t have to experience catastrophe to be brought to repentance. The Galileans who were killed by Pilate or who died under the falling tower were not necessarily in greater need of repentance than anybody else. We’re all called to acknowledge our sinfulness and ask for God’s pardon.

Secondly, the fact that we do not experience catastrophe does not mean that everything is as it should be between us and God. Like the owner of the fig tree, God may be giving us a last chance to deal with our lack of fruitfulness.

Whatever the circumstances of our life, repentance has to be part of it. We’re all sinners and we all need to acknowledge our sinfulness.
