The Kindness of Strangers

The kindness of strangers

A lack of money kept Clement Mary Hofbauer (1751-1820) from the seminary, so he went to work in a monastery bakery. Then, two women he barely knew offered to send him to the University of Vienna. Clement Mary went on to spend nearly 40 years as a Redemptorist priest in Austria and Poland.

St. Clement Mary,
your example inspires me
to provide assistance—
spiritual, emotional, financial—
to strangers as well as to those I love.

Give a kind word or other support to someone who isn’t a relative or close friend, without first evaluating whether or not he or she is worth the effort.
