Daily Reading from the USCCB: 1 Timothy 3:14-16
In today’s first reading, the author of First Timothy offers some interesting and powerful descriptions. For instance, he refers to the community of faith as “the household of God”, and the “Church of the living God” as “the pillar and foundation of truth.”
He continues and refers to Jesus–God the Son–as “the mystery of devotion” who
“is undeniably great,
manifested in the flesh,
vindicated in the spirit,
seen by angels,
proclaimed to the Gentiles,
believed in throughout the world,
taken up in glory.”
In just a few, but highly descriptive words, he offers us a whole theology of the Church and of Jesus–by using simple, graphic words and phrases which paint pictures that we can think about for quite some time.
Of course, there is plenty of room for formal theology, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be highfalutin or grandiose. A whole lot can be said with a few simple words, and the author of our reading does this very well.
Such is the beauty of our scriptures.
