How God must have rejoiced in St. Teresa of Avila! She was intelligent, witty, graceful, assertive and decisive—never pompous or pious. She was quoted as having said, “From silly devotions and sour-faced saints, good Lord deliver us!”

“Do you think it’s a small matter to have a friend like Jesus at your side?”
