Francis discovered the humility of God through his encounter with Jesus Christ, especially the Christ on the cross. He described the mystery of the triune God as sublime and humble, ineffable and immanent, a mystery of opposites, which he grasped through his insight to Christ as Son, Word and wisdom of the Father. The most profound expression of God’s humility for Francis was in the Eucharist and he described this mystery of God’s humble presence, this “Body of Christ,” as the principal sacrament of God and the means of relationship to God.

Franciscan spirituality has often been described as INCARNATIONAL. The Mystery of the INCARNATION--the Divine Son of GOD/Second Person of the Blessed Trinity humbling Himself by taking our humanity upon Himself, especially demonstrated in His birth in the manager at Bethlehem, in His suffering & desth on the Cross, & in further humbling Himself to come to us under the form of bread in the Eucharist, is at the CENTER of the spirituality of St. Francis of Assisi & of all of us who are followers of Our LORD JESUS CHRIST in the footsteps of St. Francis of Assisi. Our GOD is both TRANSCENDENT--so holy, just & high above us that if not for His bending down to us we could not dare approach or touch Him--and IMMANENT--intimate, longing for contact with us, loving, merciful, compassionate, approachable, ever near & present to us in our midst because that is initially His desire for relationship with us. The pre Vatican II Catholic Church & the Tridentine Latin Mass put a great emphasis on the TRANSCENDENCE of GOD & minimize the IMMINENCE of GOD. The Church since Vatican II & the Ordinary Form put a greater emphasis on the IMMANENCE of GOD & put lesser emphasis on His TRANSCENDENCE. It is in the Person of JESUS CHRIST & in His INCARNATION that not only is His DIVINITY united with His HUMANITY but GOD'S TRANSCENDENCE is united with & reconciled with His IMMANENCE.
