First Saturday of Lent: Francis and the Sultan

Francis and the Sultan

“Love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you.”
—Matthew 5:44

The best illustration from the life of Francis of his willingness to take this passage seriously was his journey to visit the sultan. Francis’ willingness to meet with and talk to the sultan showed a level of tolerance that few of his day could match, although Sultan Malik al-Kamil was himself known for his tolerance of other faiths.

This meeting between Francis and the sultan has received a great deal of attention in our own century. The need for peace and understanding is as great in our time as it was during the Crusades, and sometimes as little valued. Francis still sets an example for us.

Pray with Saint Francis

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console; to be understood, as to understand; to be loved, as to love. For it is in giving that we receive. It is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life. Amen.
