Christmas at the Monastery

It is the beautiful task of Advent to awaken in all of us memories of goodness and thus to open doors of hope.

—Cardinal Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI), Seek That Which Is Above

By the Work of Their Hands

IN ADDITION TO FEEDING their spiritual life, the monks of the Monastery of the Holy Spirit also work to feed the stomachs and souls of visitors. The work flows from the Rule of St. Benedict, which says that the monks must work for their living “by their own hands.”

In that spirit, the monks provide numerous products and industries ranging from biscotti to bonsai trees. Their industries include fruitcake, fudge, stained glass, the Abbey Store, and the Bonsai Greenhouse.

Their pamphlet witnesses to their Gospel commitment: “We believe work done for the sake of love, as we strive to remain open to the Holy Spirit, is itself a form of prayer. It is in this spirit that we produce and offer our handmade food items to you and your loved ones.

“At times of celebration, we hope you will find our quality, handmade food products useful in expressing your love and thoughtfulness to loved ones in your life.”
